Tiny Trends!

If you’re a millennial, you know that the reality of owning your own home can seem like an impossibly daunting task in the 21 century in what seems like an ever soaring market in most major Canadian cities. With housing prices climbing year over year in hot markets where all the jobs are, being able to save enough while paying your living expenses and still maintaining some semblance of a fun or social life can feel, well, exhausting.

Take whatever solace you want in this small fact, you’re not alone. A quick search of “millennials and tiny homes” results in plenty of articles that indicate that the Millennial housing perspective is tilting towards alternative options.

What does that even mean though?

It means that getting into a conventional, 2,500 sq ft, 70s bi-level as your first foot in the real estate door may not be the reality for a lot of younger folks. A condo, townhouse, tiny home or even a suited or roommate-shared home option may be a creative and alternative first step into the real estate Monopoly game. The Millennial generation is having to take a new perspective on what “home ownership” means in this ever-inflating world. Whether it’s the sky-high prices in hot markets like Vancouver, Toronto and Kelowna or the high cost of living off the west coast and central-interior areas of BC or even, simply, the lack of unoccupied ground to build on, Millennials are having to reshape and rethink what they want in a home-base. In fact, Millennials are leading the way in alternative housing by choice, with many claiming that they have never wanted a massive home and thus, the tiny home trend suits their sustainable, affordable lifestyles much more appropriately than anything else.

The last few years have shifted many mindsets to a more nomadic and transient lifestyle that allows for Millennials and coming generations to stand with a foot on either side of the conventional and modern life-line; one foot planted in homeownership and one foot jet-setting off to the next sunset adventure (perhaps even airbnb’ing their home-base to help pay for that plane ticket!).
